I have no idea who they are. I awoke five hours ago in a darkened room, a lump the size of a grapefruit on the back of my head, and not the faintest idea where I was. I remembered being out walking in the light rain of evening, but the next thing I knew I was here. About where ‘here’ is, I know little. A small, windowless room with a solid door (locked – checking it was the first thing I did, of course), a pile of rumpled blankets that serves as the bed on which I woke, a desk, and a chair.
When I called out, a voice addressed me from the other side of the door, and informed me that I had a task to perform, a task of vital importance, and so long as I performed it to their satisfaction, I would be freed. I had no idea what they were talking about – why they wanted me, what I could possibly have to offer them. The door was drawn back. Immediately I rushed forwards, only to be clubbed to the ground by burly men with strange accents. Another man stepped inside, and placed onto the desk a grubby laptop. He pointed at it and grunted a single word at me
‘Summarise’.
They left me there, with the laptop, the desk, and a couple of guttering candles. I began to write.
